Not-So-Useless College Degrees

A recent Yahoo! article has me flabbergasted. In the article, journalist Terence Loose highlights “College Majors That Are Useless” and should be avoided at all costs. Not only was “agriculture” at the top of the list, but the top five also included “animal science” and “horticulture.”

Being a graduate of an agriculture program and gainfully employed by a company that provides support to agribusinesses, I was in obvious disagreement with the article.

The future is bright for students who study agriculture on any level. A study done by AgCareers.com, one of the largest agriculture job-posting websites, added 3,000 jobs PER MONTH each month of 2010 and into 2011. And let’s not leave out the fact that 47% of those jobs required a bachelor’s degree in agriculture or a related field of study.

What the author of this article also failed to recognize is agriculture provides jobs for more than 24 million American workers, and as long as there are people walking this planet who need to eat in order to survive, there will be job security in agriculture.

Be proud of your agriculture degree. I know I am.
