The cooperative spirit is near and dear to the heart of everyone at VistaComm. We came into existence 19 years ago to help fill the communication needs of agricultural cooperatives—most of whom weren’t blessed at that time with a full- (or part-) time communications director. Since then, we’ve worked with more than 100 co-ops, and have developed a deep understanding of and respect for the cooperative way of doing business.
We also recognize that there is a vast world of cooperatives outside of agriculture, with “world” being the key word. Cooperatives are such an important, and growing, way to conduct business that in 2009, the United Nations General Assembly passed a resolution declaring 2012 the UN International Year of Co-operatives.
The UN resolution recognizes the diversity of the co-operative movement around the world and urges governments to take measures aimed at creating a supportive environment for the development of co-operatives. Click here to go to the UN IYC website to find out more about the UN Resolution.
We’re proud to be associated with organizations practicing a different business model, one that focuses on individuals banding together to accomplish more together than anyone could accomplish on their own. It’s a model that enables those who collectively own the business—and the communities in which they live—to enjoy the benefits instead of all profits going to shareholders in another state or country.
Having an International Year of Co-operatives provides an opportunity to captivate the attention of national governments, the business community and, most importantly, the general public on the advantages provided by the co-operative model. If you’re a co-operative member, take this opportunity to celebrate what you have—and to educate those who may not have a clue what makes a co-operative tick.
